Brain basics
On this page
Your brain is the control centre of everything you do. It’s incredibly complex, but it also has an amazing ability to adapt, heal, and grow.
Brain injury
Everything from breathing and moving, to thinking, feeling, and connecting with others is controlled by your brain. When a concussion or brain injury happens, the effects depend on which part of the brain is involved. The diagram below highlights the main areas and what they do.
Hope and recovery
No two brain injuries are the same. An injury might affect one area while other areas keep working as usual. The good news is that the brain has neuroplasticity – the ability to adapt, form new connections, and find different pathways.
There’s no quick fix or magic pill, but with time, rehabilitation, and the right support, recovery or improvement is possible. Progress often comes step by step – and it’s rarely a smooth pathway. There can be ups and downs, and no two recoveries follow the same pattern. What matters is that your brain is remarkable, and with patience and persistence, it can keep working with you as you heal.
